# Communication types

> Group your content by the kind of communication it is, so Adclear checks each promotion against the right rules, claims, and disclaimers.

Communication types let you group your content by what kind of communication it is, and tell Adclear how to review each group. A promotion's communication type decides which rules, claims, and disclaimers Adclear checks it against.

For example:

* A **financial promotion** for a savings account is checked against your FCA rules, and needs disclaimers that are clear, fair, and not misleading.
* An **internal newsletter** doesn't need those disclaimers. It's checked against a smaller set of rules written for internal communications.

Communication type sits alongside product, channel, and jurisdiction as one of the things that decide which checks apply.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Communication types aren't the same as [upload types](https://docs.adclear.ai/upload-types.md). Upload types (Single, Carousel, Variations, and Batch) describe how content is packaged for review. Communication types describe what kind of communication it is.

## Your default communication type

By default, everything is treated as a financial promotion. Every workspace starts with one communication type, **Financial Promotion**, and it's the workspace default.

Adclear uses the default whenever a type isn't chosen:

* New uploads start with the default selected.
* Promotions created through the API or [MCP](https://docs.adclear.ai/mcp/tools-and-permissions.md) without a type use the default.
* Pre-checks without a type run against the default.
* New rules, claims, disclaimers, and policies start scoped to the default only.

## Adding communication types

Adclear staff set up communication types for you. If you want other communication types added, reach out to your Adclear contact with:

* The communication types you need.
* A line on what each one covers.

Each promotion can only have one communication type, so the types need to be distinct. A communication type has to exist before you can assign rules, claims, disclaimers, or policies to it.

## Choosing a communication type when you upload

On every [upload type](https://docs.adclear.ai/upload-types.md), the metadata sidebar has a **Communication type** field. It starts with your workspace default, and you pick one type per upload.

The type is set on the campaign, so every version of the promotion keeps it. You can see it in the **Communication type** field on the promotion's details sidebar.

> [!WARNING]
>
> A promotion's communication type can't be changed after upload. Check it before you create the promotion. To use a different type, upload the content again with the right type selected.

## How communication types shape the review

The communication type tells Adclear what sort of communication a promotion is, and so what to check. Only rules, claims, and disclaimers that apply to the promotion's communication type are checked. Items set to **All communication types** apply to every type.

Two kinds of direct link are always checked, whatever their communication type:

* **Approved claims linked to the promotion.**
* **Disclaimers a matching rule requires.**

### When nothing applies

A review needs something to check. If no rules, approved claims, or disclaimers apply to the promotion's communication type, product, channel, and jurisdiction, the review fails. The message starts "No applicable rules, claims or disclaimers were found for this promotion" and names the combination Adclear looked for.

This usually means a communication type is new and nothing has been set up for it yet. Speak to your Adclear contact to set up the right checks.

> [!NOTE]
>
> If your organization shares rules or claims across workspaces, shared items set to **All communication types** apply to every type in each workspace. Items scoped to specific types only carry across between each workspace's default communication type. Other types aren't matched between workspaces, even when they have the same name.

## Financial promotion classification

On your default communication type, Adclear AI first decides whether the asset is a financial promotion at all, using your workspace's financial promotion rules. This keeps content that isn't a financial promotion out of financial promotion checks, so reviewers don't wade through comments that don't apply.

| Result | What happens |
| - | - |
| It's a financial promotion | The full review runs. For example, an advert for a new investment product. |
| It isn't a financial promotion | The review ends with no rule checks needed. For example, an internal email about a company event. |
| Adclear can't tell | Adclear treats it as a financial promotion and runs the full review. |

You always have the final say:

* If Adclear decides an asset isn't a financial promotion but you still need a review, use **Mark as Financial Promotion** to run the full review. See [Submitting for review](https://docs.adclear.ai/marketing/submitting-for-review.md#ai-evaluation-progress).
* If your upload form shows a **Financial Promotion** toggle, switching it off tells Adclear the content isn't a financial promotion, and the review doesn't run.

Other communication types skip this step. Adclear always runs the checks for that type, and the promotion's **Financial Promotion** field shows **N/A**. Use a separate communication type for content that isn't a financial promotion but still needs its own checks.

## Assigning communication types to rules, claims, disclaimers, and policies

Rules, claims, disclaimers, and policies each have a **Communication Types** field. Unlike a promotion, they can have several types.

You set it when you create or edit an item, or add a new version:

* Pick one or more types.
* Or choose **All communication types (and future)** to cover every type, including ones added later.

Every item needs at least one type, or the all option.

On the Rules, Claims, Disclaimers, and Policies pages, a **Communication Types** column and filter show each item's scope. The item's sidebar shows it too.

> [!TIP]
>
> New rules, claims, disclaimers, and policies start with only your workspace default selected, not all communication types. Change the selection before saving if the item should apply more widely.

When you link claims during upload, claims that apply to the communication type you've selected are listed under **Relevant Claims**. Claims for other communication types still show, under **Not Applicable**. They can only be linked if your workspace allows linking claims that don't apply. Ask your Adclear contact if you need this.

> [accordion] Rules
>
> Communication type is one of the triggers that decide when a rule applies. See [Rules](https://docs.adclear.ai/compliance/rules.md).

> [accordion] Claims
>
> Each claim is scoped to the communication types it can be used with. If a claim doesn't cover a promotion's communication type, you can extend its scope from the finding. See [Reviewing claims](https://docs.adclear.ai/compliance/claims.md) and [Claim findings](https://docs.adclear.ai/compliance/claim-findings.md).

> [accordion] Disclaimers
>
> Disclaimers are scoped by communication type alongside products, channels, and jurisdictions. See [Policies and disclaimers](https://docs.adclear.ai/compliance/policies.md#disclaimers).

> [accordion] Policies
>
> Policies are scoped by communication type when you upload them or add a new version. See [Policies and disclaimers](https://docs.adclear.ai/compliance/policies.md).

## Using communication types with MCP

If you work with Adclear through [MCP](https://docs.adclear.ai/mcp/connect.md):

* `getPromotionFilterOptions` lists your workspace's communication types and marks the default.
* `createPromotion` and `precheckPromotion` accept a `communicationTypeId`. Without one, they use the workspace default.

See [Tools and permissions](https://docs.adclear.ai/mcp/tools-and-permissions.md) for the full tool list.

## FAQs

> [accordion] Is a communication type the same as an upload type?
>
> No. Upload types (Single, Carousel, Variations, and Batch) describe how content is packaged for review. Communication types describe what kind of communication it is, and decide which checks apply.

> [accordion] How do I add a new communication type?
>
> Reach out to your Adclear contact with the types you need and a line on what each covers. Adclear staff add them for you.

> [accordion] Can I change a promotion's communication type after upload?
>
> No. The type is set when the promotion is created. Upload the content again with the right type selected.

> [accordion] Why was a claim checked that isn't linked to this communication type?
>
> Approved claims linked directly to the promotion are always checked, whatever their communication type.

> [accordion] Why does the Financial Promotion field show N/A?
>
> The promotion uses a communication type other than your workspace default. Adclear skipped financial promotion classification and ran the checks for that type instead.

> [accordion] Why did my review fail with no applicable rules, claims or disclaimers?
>
> Nothing is set up for the promotion's combination of communication type, product, channel, and jurisdiction. Speak to your Adclear contact to set up the right checks.
