# Escalations

> Escalating to legal and handling risk acceptance flows.

## Escalating to legal

Escalations to legal are initiated by reviewers when specialist input is needed before a decision can be made. Uploaders do not escalate to legal directly.

    Select a Legal reviewer from the dropdown. Status changes to Escalated.

  <Step title="Legal user responds">
    The Legal user sees the promotion in their tasks and responds. Their reply appears as a comment prefixed "Legal Escalation:".

  <Step title="Promotion returns to you">
    After the Legal response, the promotion returns to your tasks in Pending Review status. You make the final decision.

<Note>
  Legal's role is limited to resolving escalations and disputes. They do not make the final review decision themselves. The decision returns to the reviewer once Legal has weighed in.

## Risk escalations

If an uploader escalates a Rejected or Changes Needed decision to an Uploader user with Risk Accepting permissions, the status changes through Escalated then Reviewing Risk. The Uploader user with Risk Accepting permissions responds with a comment prefixed "Risk Acceptance:" and, if they accept the risk, the promotion moves to Risk Accepted.
